Downpatrick 'Dun-Leth-glaisse'
It was in the 18th and 19th century that the Downpatrick that we know
now began to develop. Of course Downpatrick's earlier history influenced
that growth and character of the town. In the 18th century Edward
Southwell saw that Downpatrick had economic potential. The development
of the town began with the task of controlling the River Quoile and
the surrounding marsh land. After Southwell's death his son continued
in his father's pursuit to make Downpatrick into a significant town
within Co. Down. A new harbour was built, the streets of the town
were reconstructed and a customs office was built.
