Mourne Mountains, Newcastle
The
Mourne Mountains can be found in Newcastle to the
south of County Down. It was a granite slab from the
Mournes that was placed in the grounds of the Down
Cathedral
as a memorial to St. Patrick who is buried in an unknown location
in the grounds. It was also granite from the Mournes that was used
in the construction of the church at Saul in 1932
and the erection of the monument on Slieve
Patrick
to mark the 1,500th Anniversary of S. Patrick.
Slieve Donard stands at 2,796 Ft, it is not only the highest mountain in the Mournes but also the highest mountain in Northern Ireland. There are 12 peaks all over 2000 feet high. All of the summits of the Mournes are grouped together, which is quite unusual to find.

golf course and a truly magnificent stretch of beach. On a clear day
its possible to see the Isle of Man and sometimes even as far as Scotland
