Slemish 'Sliabh Mis'

slemish view slemish view As previously stated, it is though that after St. Patrick's capture ad journey to Ireland that he was sold to the Antrim chief Milchu - who made him a herdsman. It is thought that there he dwelled for six years, attending to sheep in the valley of the Braid and on the slopes of Slemish. Slemish is located near Broushane and Ballymena, Co. Antrim in the north east of Ireland.

After six years in captivity Patrick had a dream in which he was visited by an Angel. The Angel advised him to flee from this land, rid himself of the master that keeps him enslaved. Patrick did as he was instructed.

Patrick later returned to Ireland when yet again an angel came to him in a dream. On his return Patrick wished to go to Slemish, as he neared it he was struck with horror to find the home of his old master Milchu enveloped in flames. Milchu had collected all of his worldly possessions into his mansion and setting it a light, threw himself into the flames. His shame of his enslaving Patrick and fear of what he thought Patrick might do was too much for him to contend with.

Geologists can now tell us a lot more about Slemish, around 60 million years ago it was formed when the tectonic plates stated to move apart. Slemish is said to have had a volcanic past. The county of Antrim rests on an irregular Plateau of hills and uplands. Volcanic activity has left a rigged chalk and basalt coastline, with the Giants Causeway its strangest feature.

However, like most things with regard to Patrick's past there is controversy over whether or not Slemish, Co. Antrim was in fact the place where he spent six year of his capture - some historians believe that it is possible that the place he referred to was in fact located in Mayo or Sligo. Patrick spoke of an expanse of water which is thought to have been Lough Neagh which is clearly viewed from the top of Slemish - it is possible that the body of water could easily have passed for a sea.

Many have pointed out that the wood of Foclut was on the shore of Killala Bay in Mayo and modern inference has suggested that the Atlantic is the western sea described.

Though it is the reference to the distance walked by Patrick which generally sways people's opinion to that of Slemish being the location of Patrick's enslavement .
