Kilclief Castle
15th Century Castle
Kilclief Castle is located 2.5 miles (4km) south of Strangford village on the A2 to Ardglass.
Kilclief is an early tower-house built between 1413 and 1441 as a residence for John Cely the Bishop of Down. With its square projecting turrets, high arch and spiral staircase, it is one of the oldest in Lecale. The unusual style of this castle appears to have been a model for those in Ardglass, and Audley's Castle nearby. The nearby parish church has medieval coffin lids on display. In 1601 the site was still garrisoned for the Crown by Nicholas Fitzsimon (still a local name). But by the 18th Century the castle was thatched and part of a farm.
