Six Famous Sons of Killyleagh by Clive Scoular

Hans Sloane - Edward Hincks - Henry Blackwood - Henry Cooke - Terry Cochrane - David Healy

The lives of the above six men are the focus of Clive Scoular’s new book.  In it he discusses their connection with Killyleagh and how each of them has left their mark on the village. When asked why he had chosen to write about these six characters, Clive’s response was simply that these are his six famous sons of Killyleagh.  He believes that each of the six men represents a flag-carrier for Killyleagh and that the village is the common denominator between them all.  Among his aims are to make the people of Killyleagh realise what an evident role these individuals have played in the inspiring history of this village.  Also, he desires to elevate the lesser known names.  For example, in the past little was thought of Edward Hincks who was in all probability the most intelligent of the ‘sons’.

Perhaps one of the most interesting points made by Clive is to consider, that this village has quite possibly had, in proportion to its population, more famous sons and daughters than Belfast or indeed Dublin!

Clive has already written four popular books -- James Chichester-Clark: Prime Minister of Northern Ireland; Maeve de Markievicz: Daughter of Constance; In the Headlines: The Story of the Belfast Europa Hotel and; John M. Andrews: Northern Ireland's Wartime Prime Minister.

As an author, expert in Irish history, lecturer, book enthusiast and someone who has lived in Killyleagh for almost 40 years, who better to write a book about Killyleagh itself?

The book is people-friendly, with sufficient pictures and the sections written on each ‘son’ are not too lengthy.  It is handy as all the information about these six famous men has been put together in one piece and is at the reader’s fingertips.  Every household in Killyleagh should definitely have a copy!

With the potential launch of the book possibly being held at Killyleagh Castle some time in October, this event will truly capture the history of the village of Killyleagh.

Clive hopes to promote his latest work by visiting schools in the local area and providing the children with order forms.  Forms/books will also be offered in shops and may also be made available in other public places e.g. in the Killyleagh churches.

The book will be selling at just £9.99 or, for even better value, £8.99, if you choose to purchase further copies.  To order a copy/copies of the book via the internet please send your details to clive.scoular@virgin.net.

As well as being a busy author and historian, Clive also offers a personal, and might I add cheap, ‘book sleuth’ service.  Consequently, if you happen to be looking for a book and don’t know where to find it or can’t get your hands on a copy, get in touch with Clive.  He will be delighted to help you locate books on his specialist subject Irish history, or indeed any other topic.  You can contact Clive in the following ways:
